- Abstract
The article discusses therapy options for refractory hypoxemia in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The case of a 23-year-old male economist who presented with a "bug bite" on his left calf after returning from his travel to New Orleans, Louisiana in July 2009. ARDS is clinically described as a common and severe form of acute lung injury, resulting from both direct and indirect pulmonary insults. Treatment options mentioned include recruitment maneuvers, prone positioning, inhaled nitric oxide, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and high-frequency oscillatory ventilation.
