- Abstract
The article discusses information handoffs in medicine, examining the parallels that exist and the lessons that medicine can learn from the turnover of information that occurs on the U.S. Coast Guard training ship Eagle. The passing of information that occurs between the change of shifts at a hospital contains many parallels to the changing of the bridge team on a military shift, the authors indicate. Other topics include passing critical information from one shift to the next, safety as a critical issue for both health care and the Eagle, and communications as a primary contributing factor in medical errors.
