- Abstract
In this article the author replies to criticism of his article "Hate Crime/Thought Crime" level by Michael Lieberman that appears elsewhere in this issue of the magazine. It is the author's contention that U.S. hate crime legislation makes criminal thought and speech and detracts from the freedoms of thought and speech. A number of issues are addressed including the fact that bias crimes are frequently more violent than non-bias crimes, the emotional trauma of hate crimes and the anti-intimidation statutes that prohibit crimes such as the racially motivated burning of crosses.
