- Abstract
This article reports on a study in Europe on how exposure to diesel exhaust from vehicles affects people. The study found that exposure to the exhaust promotes heart attacks and inhibits the body's ability to dispel blood clots which may be one reason that air pollution is tied to higher heart attack numbers. The study used men who had already had a heart attack and found that when they were exposed to the fumes they had a greater level of the protein tissue plasminogen activator and more stress on their hearts during exercise. The authors of the study called for added environmental health policy to address urban air pollution.
