- Abstract
In this article the author examines the three most common types of headaches. Tension headaches occur most frequently. The pain is described as a constant dull ache, accompanied by tension in the head, neck and shoulders. A tension headache comes on gradually and while one can last for hours or even days but it is not considered incapacitating. Such headaches should be treated with nonprescription drugs. Migraine headaches are less common and women tend to have them more than men. These headaches, which are episodic, are considered to be debilitating. They can be treated with prescription and nonprescription medication. Cluster headaches occur more often in men. They are characterized by severe pain around one eye and are treated with prescription drugs.
