- Abstract
The essay explores historical imperial accounts involving the five senses written by both Americans and Europeans traveling in colonial possessions, focusing particularly on British accounts of India from 1857 to 1947 and American narratives of the Philippines from 1898 to 1946. Some of the subjects considered include both social and cultural history, interactions between Westerners and native peoples, and the historiography of imperialism.
