- Abstract
The article focuses on the booming market for natural or organic cosmetics and standards set up to regulate the industry. In Germany, industries association Bundesverband deutscher Industrie- und Handelsunternehmen e.V. (BDIH) started developing standards in 1996 and to date, a number of German and non-German firms have applied for BDIH certification. To be eligible, products may contain certain inorganic salts and other ingredients derived from hydrogenation and esterification reactions. According to Franziska Staubli, project manager of Swiss Import Promotion Programme, most natural raw materials used for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals come from plants collected from the wild. Their source are unknown and not traceable and collection of these plants are considered unsustainable.
