- Title
Making Fruit Flies More Macho for Sterile Insect Releases.
- Authors
Suszkiw, Jan
- Abstract
The article discusses Mexico's anti-fly program which aims to counter the threat caused by the Mexican fruit fly in the citrus, peach, pear and other crops industry. The program uses the sterile insect technique where millions of male fruit flies are sterilized with irradiation. When mated with wild female flies, it results in nonviable eggs that fail to hatch. Scientists use methoprene to speed up the rate at which male flies reach sexual maturity and causes them to attract more female flies.
