- Abstract
Study Objectives This study aims to evaluate the impact of a range of cooking utensils and related services (group "intervention case") on patient compliance to the cardiovascular lifestyles recommendations provided by doctors, by comparison to patients who do not benefit of the nutritional strategy ("control" group). A second objective was to compare between case and control groups the evolution of the clinical parameters and the quality of life of the patients. Methods A randomized case-control study was conducted in subjects of both sexes over 18 years, requiring cardiovascular lifestyles recommendations due to a BMI superior or equal to 27 and lower than 35, or a waist circumference =94 cm (men) or =80 cm (women) and at least one risk factor within the definition of metabolic syndrome. The intervention group benefited from the global dietetic approach of gourmet nutrition provided by Seb combining a range of cooking utensils (NutriCook, Actifry, VitaCuisine), education for their use, access to recipes promoting their use and Internet service through a blog community. The control group received a printed copy of nutritional recommendations which were explained in detail by their doctor in addition to his usual advises. Results The intermediate results cover of 29 patients in the group "intervention" and 26 in the "control" group. These patients are aged 46 years, 70.9% are women, 34.5% of them are overweight and 65.5% are obese. Their average waist circumference is 102 cm for a hip measurement of 112 cm. No statistically significant difference was present between groups at baseline. The first results show a decrease of 2 points of BMI in the intervention group 30 vs. 32 in the control group, a decrease of 6 cm of the waist circumference in the intervention group vs. 3 cm in the control group, a greater vitality self-estimated on a scale from 0 to 100 to 71 in the intervention group vs. 57 in the control group and a positive perception of health status estimated at 66 in the intervention group vs. 56. These elements are correlated to changes in food choices in the intervention group. These results, however, are only trends with values approaching the level of significance when only half the number of subjects is available for analysis. The final results on all patients should allow these elements to achieve statistical significance. Conclusion The global dietetic approach called "gourmet nutrition" seems to have an effective influence on food choices, which may positively influence the clinical outcomes of overweight and obese patients, through a re-enforcement of the cardiovascular lifestyles recommendations provided by their medical practitioners.
