- Abstract
Background: Inflammation of the gall bladder is termed as cholecystitis. The present study was conducted to assess cases of cholecystitis. Materials & Methods: 80 patients of cholecystectomy of both genders were enrolled. All underwent ultrasound performed with Toshiba machine with abdominal use transducers and the frequency ranged from 1.0 to 7.0 MHz. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography abdomen was performed using GE Discovery 750HD single-source dual-energy CT scanner. Results: Age group 20-40 years had 6 males and 5 females, 40-60 years had 18 males and 12 females and >60 years had 21 males and 18 females. Common aetiology of cholecystitis was cholestasis in 25, hyperlipidaemia in 12, hereditary spherocystosis in 6, liver cirrhosis in 17, ileal disease in 9 and idiopathic in 11 cases. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). Conclusion: Common aetiological factors for cholecystitis was cholestasis, hyperlipidaemia, hereditary spherocystosis, liver cirrhosis, ileal disease and idiopathic.
