- Abstract
An essay is presented on the changing uses of veil during the Victorian period and the modernist aesthetics theorized by poet and author Katherine Mansfield. Topics discussed include the representation of veil for female confinement, duplicity, and clairvoyance, the representation of veil in literary works such as the book "Behind a Mask," by Louisa May Alcott and the novel "Lady Audley's Secret," by Mary Elizabeth Braddon, and combination of veil with mirror as a social ideal of femininity.
