- Abstract
In this work the structural and magnetic properties of the Mn50Al46Ni4 alloy were investigated. Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) measurements pointed out the formation of the metastable τ phase around 480 °C and its decomposition into the stable γ2 and β-Mn(Al) phases at 850 °C. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) investigations show that all of the samples are phase mixtures. The γ phase was found along with the ϵ' phase only in the as-cast sample and the ones annealed at 470°C, a fact which was confirmed by M(T) measurements which showed two transitions at 445 K and 628 K, which correspond to the ferromagnetic ϵ' and γ phases, respectively. The samples annealed at 710 and 850 °C showed a single magnetic phase behavior with lower Curie temperatures of 418 K (Al2Mn3) and 434 K (ϵ'-type phase) respectively. A maximum t phase concentration of 43% was found for the sample annealed at 470 °C for 5 h. The close values of the theoretical and experimental effective magnetic moments confirm the existence of the ϵ' and γ phases in these alloys.
