- Abstract
The significance of the distinction made in the "Introduction" to The Concept of Anxiety between "first" and "second" ethics has been ignored in the literature on Kierkegaard. The first part of this article traces the movement from first to second ethics. It argues that second ethics is not just a special ethics (Sonderethik) but the ethics which is being transformed. The second part delineates this transformation of ethics: second ethics is ethics through a critique of moral self-consciousness and ethics by virtue of what is beyond the ethical demand, being an ethics of forgiveness and love. The outlook of ethics - the view of what phenomena are ethically relevant - is transformed. Second ethics is an ethics of vision.
