- Abstract
The primary aim of this study is to assess the relationship between the level of occupational demand of university lecturers, a teaching sector that is usually researched less than teachers from pre-university levels, and their physical and mental health. The sample is composed of 212 teachers, with an average age of 46.6 years and 15.2 years of professional experience. The methodological design applies a quantitative, descriptive, ex post facto, cross-sectional, and correlational approach. The Burnout Self-Test Maslach Burnout Inventory is applied. The results show that university lecturers are, in general terms, satisfied with their work, whilst, in a significant number of cases, they report feeling emotionally burned out. Lecturers between 36 and 55 years of age are under the highest levels of occupational demand, leading to more reported cases of burnout. It is concluded that work experience appears to be a protective factor against burnout.
