REQUIEM FOR A PIPEDREAM: OIL, THE WORLD BANK, AND THE NEED FOR HUMAN RIGHTS ASSESSMENTS.
- Authors
Sharp, Dustin N.
- Abstract
The article analyzes the phenomenon resource curse in sub-Saharan Africa oil extraction. In this phenomenon, revenues in oil extraction projects are in theory a great boon to development but in practice, they are associated with human rights fallout in a poor country. Assessments of human rights fail in preventing the resource curse, but, they steer the World Bank towards those projects that can mitigate the phenomenon. The move serves as a valuable tool in structuring projects.
