- Abstract
The article discusses the use of zero-mode waveguide (ZMW) for single-molecule DNA sequencing, as reported by a research team from Pacific Biosciences in Menlo Park, California in 2010. Such nanometer-sized chambers have been applied by researchers and academic scientists to track the transit of transfer RNA (tRNA) through the ribosome. The waveguide features a subwavelength-diameter nanofabricated hole in metal film, limiting the capability of light to a zeptoliter volume. Other applications of ZMWs are discussed.
