- Abstract
An essay that explores the work of Québec-based French Canadian painters and writers in the first half of the 19th century is presented. It examines how the concept of identity proved to be a problematic issue for these writers and painters and explores how they engaged the landscape. It examines the representation of sites of memory, discusses the image of the Amerindian and the development of a French-Canadian identity.
