- Authors
Zucker, Elyse; Casari, William
- Abstract
The article describes a developmental reading class at Hostos Community College in the Bronx, New York, in which students were taught about and visited the neighborhood's Grand Concourse street complex as a means to explore the ethnic and racial history of the community along with the college's role in the community. During the class, students read about the concept of the American Dream as it applied to the Concourse's history of immigration and change and viewed the Concourse's many public murals, mosaics, and sculptures. Students were also required to conduct research on whichever ethnic group they were a part of.
