- Abstract
The article discusses the role of ecumenism in the life and work of Josyf Slipyj, a Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Particular focus is given to his views on Byzantinism and the relationship between the Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Details on his arrest and imprisonment, and on his appointment as Exarch of Eastern Ukraine, are presented. Other topics include Metropolitan Archbishop Andrey Sheptytsky, the Bishop of Rome, and the Second Vatican Council.
