- Title
Dickens and Dance in the 1840s.
- Authors
Morgentaler, Goldie
- Abstract
The article focuses on how the dance scenes in Charles Dickens' Christmas books connote the social, medical and political context of the period. The dance scenes highlighted the Victorian underclass poverty while appealing to the middle and upper class' charitable nature that was traditional with giving during the holidays in 1840s. The dance performed by prostitute characters Nancy and Bet in the novel "Olivar Twist," in Fagin's den showed gaiety but obscured the misery of impoverished lives.
