- Authors
Perston, Yvette
- Abstract
The formation of a stoma causes physical changes to a patient's body that can cause alterations in his/her body image (Vujnovich, 2008). It is vital to an ostomist's wellbeing that he/she achieves a self-care management regimen which is suitable to his/her lifestyle. Colostomy irrigation is a safe and effective means of enabling colostomists to regain their bowel control, which has a significant impact on self-esteem and quality of life. Yvette Perston explains how colostomy irrigation works, who can use it, and the proper technique to ensure patient safety and minimal discomfort. By understanding the rationale behind the technique, health professionals can better assist patients in successful emptying of the bowel.
