- Title
Between Byzantine Men: Desire, Homosociality, and Brotherhood in the Medieval Empire by Mark Masterson (review).
- Authors
Betancourt, Roland
- Abstract
Here, we find a model to conceptualize Basil II's bachelorhood through a homosocial lens, focusing on the Byzantine understanding of an "overloving" between men while also considering that Basil II himself might have been the target of Symeon's oration. In the final chapter, Masterson turns his attention to the end of the tenth century and the rise of Basil II (r. 967-1025), considering his well-known bachelorhood. This is perhaps Masterson's best chapter, deftly demonstrating how epistolography deployed pagan antiquity to code sexual desire in strikingly frank and, at times, graphic ways.
