- Abstract
The article presents the history of interdental cleaning from the use of grass, suggested by fossilized human teeth that date back 1.8 million years, to nylon dental floss and interdental brushes. Topics discussed include use of twigs or wood splinters by early ancestors and bronze toothpicks found in prehistoric caves, mastic tree in Ancient Greece and Rome known as the toothpick tree, and chewing sticks from African and Middle Eastern Salvadora persica tree, also known as toothbrush tree.
