- Abstract
The article discusses the representation of the city of London, England in 19th century literature and considers the modernity of the poems of Charles Baudelaire and why a French poet should be considered the first modern poet. Philosopher Walter Benjamin's criticism of Baudelaire is examined as is that of critic Algernon Swinburne and the place of London, not Paris, France as the center of industrial capitalism in the 19th century is also considered.
