- Abstract
This paper aims to reflect about the role of historical study in psychology and review the course of psychological ideas from the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century in Brazil, from the perspective that, although it has its own singularity, its history is similar to that of other Latin American countries, forged in the colonization process. The method used is a literature review on two intersecting themes, the history of Brazil and the history of psychology in the country. It presents the so-called "Thomistic psychology" in the colonial period and its gradual replacement by scientific psychology, that is, the passage of the religious discourse on the soul by the new medical-scientific discourse. However, that discourse manifests itself powerfully and resumes part of its space in the beginning of the 20th century under the guise of "neo-tomism", showing a bifurcation in the teaching and practice of psychology in the first half of the century.
