- Abstract
The article discusses American general Winfield Scott, commenting on his influence in incorporating French tactics into the U.S. Army and on how his writings have shaped his reputation. It notes that he trained soldiers in Napoleonic tactics in Buffalo, New York during the War of 1812. The author considers Scott's leadership in the Mexican War of 1846 to 1848 and the capture of Mexico City, Mexico. The opinions of British soldier and statesman Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, concerning Scott are also addressed.
