- Abstract
The novel "The Devil to Pay in the Backlands"" by João Guimarães Rosa, tells a story of fear and attraction, wonderment and fascination. During the crossing of the São Francisco river, Riobaldo, the protagonist-reciter, experiences an act of transformation of an iniciatic fashion (Bolle, 2005). We will discuss the character Diadorim as a medium of such a crossing through a transgender perspective: a boy, dressed as a herdsman, with imense green eyes. By the means of an approximative stance, we identify in Diadorim the figure of enchantment and repulse, distinctive feelings that lead Riobaldo to challenge his own sexuality, which, for instance, is marked by the "regime of sexual difference" (Preciado, 2020). The notion of a dialectical image (Benjamin, 2009) is the prism through which we investigate the clash between the beautiful and terrible faces of Diadorim, and which allows us to identify, upon the notion of crossing, the elements for a reading based on a trans paradigm.
