- Abstract
The aim of the paper is to investigate the representation in the curricula of the faculties of education/pedagogy in Serbia of the courses offering content which enables further development of linguistic and communicative competencies of students in the field of Serbian language as a mother tongue and official language and English as a foreign language. The comparative analysis presented in the paper is based on a number of academic courses, a total number of lessons, and a number of credits, which enables a better insight into the representation of certain groups of either compulsory or elective academic courses. The obtained data indicate that, despite an uneven representation of the courses of Serbian Language and Literature, their number increases relative to the years of study (though not at all faculties); when it comes to English Language courses, the number of compulsory courses decreases with years of study; the situation is particularly alarming with regard to courses aimed at developing communication skills, given that one course, or none, is not sufficient to train students to communicate successfully with their future pupils. When the time comes for the next accreditation of the curricula, a special place should be given to the academic courses dealing with Serbian language as a mother tongue or official language in the Republic of Serbia and English as a first foreign language, as well as to the courses aimed at developing communicative linguistic competencies.
