- Abstract
Machiavelli is considered to be the founder of modern political theory in terms of handling politics as scientifically as possible outside of the religious paradigm. Machiavelli's theory adopts a realist approach to politics, mostly based on historical events and the current political structure of Renaissance Italy, excluding religious and moral perspectives. Attempting to liquidate the traditional approach, which sees the political field from a religious and moral point of view, Machiavelli declares that religious and moral institutions cannot be associated with the political authority, on the contrary, they must be in the service of the political authority. Although Machiavelli is not particularly interested in the spiritual aspect of religion, he pays attention to its practical use in the political field and considered it reasonable, even necessary, for the political authority to use it on its own behalf. Hereupon, this study aims to reveal the meaning and function of religion in the context of republican administration as described by Machiavelli. Thus, in the first part of the study, Machiavelli's understanding of the republic has been discussed, and in the second part, the meaning and function of religion in the republican administration have been discussed. As a result, according to Machiavelli, a religion should encourage civism, patriotism and the desire to freedom. However, the rulers of the monarchy or the republic should also be concerned with religion, whatever its spiritual truth, and in this context should not fall out of favor with the people; because it is a matter of political utility that extends beyond individual preferences.
