- Abstract
This essay examines contemporary land struggles from the perspective of Jesus and the jubilee tradition. The hypothesis that the Jesus movement was based on the jubilee has not received much scholarly support. This paper demonstrates two things: (1) that the evidence for this aspect of the movement is much stronger than previously supposed; and (2) that the jubilee traditions of the Hebrew Bible were radically transformed by the movement. Particular attention is given to the interpretation of the baptism of Jesus in Mt. 3.13-17, the call of the four brothers in Mk 1.16-20, the release of possessions in Mk 10.28-30, the receiving of children in Mk 10.1316, and Philemon. The essay concludes with some implications of this for a contemporary theology of the land.
