- Abstract
The social casework has the potentiality for implementation of different approaches, techniques and psychosocial interventions. Increasingly, spirituality is analyzed as a significant resource for psycho-emotional support of clients with different kind of problems. On the one hand, spirituality can be a source of support coming from the personality itself. The role of the social worker in this case is to activate this resource so that the clients can cope with their current problems. Spirituality can also be a source of support through interaction between the social worker and the individual. In this case, the professional should be able to identify and assess the specific spiritual needs of his client and to discover various sources and support systems. Last but not least, spirituality is also a means of improving the quality of the working relationship. The clients` profiles and specific fields of practice where these resources can be integrated vary widely and may include: children deprived of parental care, individuals who experience difficulties resulting from a loss of a close person and those who experience sorrow and sadness; terminally or chronically ill people; elderly; clients with mental disorders; drug addicts and those who abuse alcohol; clients experiencing difficulties in their social and personal functioning; persons who have suffered violence or trafficking; persons deprived of their liberty or those who have already been in prison and many others. The article also discusses some specific spiritual interventions in helping professions as well as issues regarding the specificity of the spiritual-oriented approach in the social work on the occasion, its resources and disadvantages. There are also some guidelines for assessing the spiritual needs of the clients.
