- Abstract
An essay is presented on the practice of veiling in visual popular culture and its relationship to gender, culture, and performance in public space in Germany. It explores the hegemonic debates concerning the representation, visibility, and the practice of veiling in the public spheres. It highlights the thematization of the practice of veiling with the use of representations of the headscarf to express alternative forms of communal and cultural attachment and female emancipation.
