- Title
The Forgotten Parent: Understanding the Forces that Influence Incarcerated Fathers' Relationships with Their Children.
- Authors
Hairston, Creasie Finney
- Abstract
The article discusses the ways in which relationship between incarcerated fathers and their children can be improved. The family roles of incarcerated fathers often get neglected by institutional policies, scholarly research and child welfare services. Public perception of incarcerated fathers is completely different than the real-life experiences of prisoner fathers. Information related family status is not readily available, resulting in limited research on fathers in prison. Family advocates should develop public policies, programs and services to promote paternal involvement and responsible fatherhood. Parent support programs also help parents in prison maintain ties with their children.
