- Abstract
The purpose of this research study was to assess how potential egg donors market themselves to intended parents. Researchers analyzed 640 pages of intake forms completed by 40 potential egg donors at an assisted reproductive technology (ART) clinic in the Midwest, United States. This was a mixed methods study, and analysis of the open- ended items consisted of reading the qualitative data line-by-line, identifying themes, coding categories, and developing matrices to uncover relationships between themes and categories. On average, participants were 27 years of age, white, unmarried, Christian, and well-educated. In relation to spiritual/altruistic motivations, many noted the importance of having a relationship with an infertile individual/couple as a primary motivator for egg donation. Furthermore, mothers emphasized the desire to share the joys of motherhood to those with reproductive assistance needs. Contrary to previous research, participants very rarely emphasized the importance of monetary compensation. Participants tended to identify preferred activities in the following domains: Athletic, Domestic, Intellectual, Natural, and Creative. In addition, participants marketed themselves as having personality traits such as agreeableness, extraversion, and conscientiousness. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.
