- Abstract
Levant Herald was one of the most important and long-lasting newspapers of the Ottoman Empire. It was published intermittently over a period of almost sixty years from 1856 to 1914. This article focuses on its first phase from its foundation until 1878 when Levant Herald was shut down by the Hamidian regime (1876-1909). First, after briefly describing the political atmosphere in which the newspaper was established, this article concentrates on the troubled relationship between Levant Herald and the Ottoman administration. Next it details the problems the newspaper had with the Sublime Porte under the management of James McCoan, its first owner, and his successor Edgar Whitaker. While underlying Levant Herald's significance for Ottoman historiography, it pays particular attention to the value of the newspaper for economic, political and social history by referring to various articles published in the newspaper.
