- Abstract
Measuring technique for underground cable routes - Determination oft he thermal conductivity of bedding materail. A crucial parameter for the design of buried power cables is the maximum operation temperature as it is one of the key limitation factors. The transport of electricity induces thermal energy that needs to be efficiently distributed to the surrounding soil. The physical parameters of the bedding materials can vary substantially due to the mechanical compression during installation. During the design process these parameters are mostly based on literature, instead of direct measurements. Knowledge of the thermo-hydraulic-mechanic coupled mechanisms allows a more profound and economic design of buried electric infrastructure. By reducing the uncertainty of the thermal parameters, the efficiency can be increased. Low conductive materials can be identified during the construction process and suitable thermal enhancements can be executed. Overheating of the cables and corresponding damages can be avoided. Over the past years new laboratory tests were developed that allow a fast and precise determination of the relevant thermal and hydraulic parameters. The test equipment, its procedures, and first results are presented in this paper.
