Metacognition means knowing about knowing or reflecting on cognition as has traditionally been assumed. Human recognition is routinely conducted by asking people to use a graded scale rather than making old or new judgments which therefore, considered to be metarecognition. It is proposed that signal detection theory could be used to explain tasks of metacognition which is quite consistent with 40 years of human cognitive research.
