- Abstract
Political thoughts may serve as a guide to a ruler's style and policy. The emergence of Jokowi as a symbol of the victory of civil society movement has become a phenomenon of populist revival in Indonesia. However, Jokowi is not a leader affiliated with the New Order authoritarian regime, nor is he from the mainstream with an ideological base. This article focuses based on Jokowi's thinking and ideology that influenced his political style and actions during his presidency of Indonesia. This study was conducted using a qualitative method, particularly interviews and library research. This article explores three political moves practice by Jokowi. First, on how he acts and behaves towards a big tent approach that attempts to including the interests of various socio-political divides in Indonesia, so much so that he becomes a pragmatic person for progressive development, but with static nationalism. Second, Jokowi's charismatic leadership style is influenced by the Javanese socio-culture, so the people are much more easily accept the style though there are some "irrationalities". Thirdly, Jokowi's behaviours and policy could also be seen as an orthodoxy, with mixture of religious and Javanese cultures. Thus, despite of his outspoken democratic and progressive rhetoric, this article argues that Jokowi's ideology is trifling and inconsistent as his ultimate objective is to prolong his stint at the presidency, at any means necessary.
