- Abstract
In the Graphics Collection of NLR, most drawings are signed by Romanian artists: Mina-Wepper Byck, Jiquidi Aurel, Gheorghe Löwendal, Samuel Mützner, Theodor Pallady, Jean Al. Steriadi, Frederic Storck, Francis Şirato and Nicolae Tonitza. As for the Romanian engravers, we can mention: Theodor Aman, Gheorghe Tattarescu, Ion Anestin, Aurel Borderache, Iosif Iser, Marcel Chirnoagă (landscapes, portraits, book illustrations). In the years 70s and 80s, according to the disposition nr. 151/1972 of the Council of Socialist Culture and Education, a copy of each Romanian engraving was sent to the National Library. Most of these have an historical and militant theme (Ana-Maria Andreescu - 1877. Proclamation of Independence; Olga Cizek - Transylvania 1784; Dan Erceanu - Michael the Brave. Alba Iulia, 1600; Mircea Olarian - Year 1907; Ion Panaitescu - 1848: For freedom, justice, unity). There are also in this collection works by foreign artists: Jakob Alt, Charles Beaumont, F.G. Busse, Jacques Callot, Louis- Jacques Catheline, Honoré Daumier, Richard Earlom, Alberto Fabbi, Orlik, R. de Hooghe, Auguste Raffet, Felicien Rops. The Romanian artist Lucia Demetriade-Bălăcescu (1895-1979) - whose masters were the painters Petraşcu Gheorghe and Eustaţiu Stoenescu, and later, at Paris, Eduard Vuillard, Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier - created illustrations for books by different authors, such as: Tudor Arghezi, I.L. Caragiale, Alecu Russo. The Graphics Collection of NLR includes 134 drawings of her most important book illustrations, Boccaccio's Decameron, translated by Eta Boeriu, and 50 drawings for the volume Album of illustrated poems (the dossier contains also her own selection of Romanian poems, her correspondence, since 1972, with Dacia Publishing House and the Foreword signed by the literary historian Şerban Cioculescu).
