- Title
John of Oxnead, chronicler of St. Benet's Holm.
- Authors
Luxford, Julian
- Abstract
Authorship of the late thirteenth-century chronicle of the abbey of St. Benet's Holm in Norfolk was given to John of Oxnead by its editor. However, some scholars have questioned the attribution, because its only basis is a seventeenth-century inscription in a surviving copy of the text. This short article produces a reference to a John of Oxnead in an account roll from the abbey written the year after the latest entry in the chronicle. It is very likely that this is the man mentioned in the post-medieval inscription: the alternative is to accept a highly improbable coincidence.
