- Abstract
"Moving Crops and the Scales of History" by Francesca Bray, Barbara Hahn, John Bosco Lourdusamy, and Tiago Saraiva explores the concept of a "cropscape," which encompasses various factors that determine the viability and meaning of a crop in a specific place and time. The authors draw on the Annales school, Science and Technology Studies (STS), and Actor-Network Theory (ANT) to analyze cropscapes over long periods and vast distances. They provide case studies that challenge traditional narratives and highlight the complex interactions between crops, markets, state power, and human labor. The authors also emphasize the importance of non-Western perspectives in understanding historical cropscapes.
