- Title
The Essence of Cinema?
- Authors
Carroll, Noël
- Abstract
In this article, the author comments on the book "Image and Mind," by Gregory Currie. The book is a major event in the study of film. It represents the first thoroughgoing philosophy of film in the analytic tradition. Like any philosophical achievement, "Image and Mind" is open to dispute. What is perhaps surprising about this book is that on so many topics it seems definitive. In this article, the author discusses Currie's characterization of the essence of cinema. By essence, Currie seems to mean common features that mark things as films rather than something else.
