- Abstract
Ottoman Divan Literature represents a well-established tradition not only in style and linguistic codes but in terms of its moral values. Beneath its mental framework there is a set of ethical and social norms and attitudes that were in practice in the Ottoman society for many ages. Nef'i is one of the pioneering poets of the divan poetry with his originality in harmony and style. In his Turkish and Persian Divans, he reflects the essential patterns of the mental tradition in a sensitive language. In his verses he displays a distinctive personality with high moral values. On the other hand, Sihâm-ı Kazâ, a collection of satirical poems, has never been well received due to its flawed language and mental incongruity with the public moral standards. In a book on Nef'i and his literary qualities published by Ebuzziya Tevfik in1887, it has been claimed that Sihâm-ı Kazâ has almost the same literary qualities as Nef'i's Divan. Despite this, when poetical commentaries and anthologies published since the Tanzimat period are examined, it may well be observed that they do not present any poems from this work. It is also interesting that poetry lovers or readers hardly keep any distiches from this work in their minds. The book does not derive its fame from its content. In this study the fact that the poems in Sihâm-ı Kazâ, in terms of content and style do not correspond to the typical conservative Turkish people's literary pleasure is to be discussed in examples quoted from both works.
