- Title
Character, Compromise, and Idealism in Willa Cather's Gardens.
- Authors
Facknitz, Mark A. R.
- Abstract
The article offers a look at the use of gardens to portray characters, compromise, and idealism in literary works by Willa Cather including "One of Ours," "The Professor's House," and "Death Comes for the Archbishop." Gardens, the author says, portray paths of sensibility, narrative and idealism in the works. The author suggests that in the book "The Song of the Lark," Cather humanizes the gardens, which act as a protagonist at times. The English word "garden" is analyzed and several excerpts from the books are presented.
