- Abstract
The article focuses on the legal actions implemented by the Oberappellationsgericht or the High Court of Appeal on suits under commercial law in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Bremen and Lübeck, Germany during the first half of the 19th century. It is stated that the commercial law is known to be a factor contributing to the legal modernization of the 19th century and many legal scholars found interest in the law, specifically the maritime commercial law, which was dealt most due to its relationship with foreign law. It cites two commercial law-related court cases handled in the High Court of Appeal, including its judgment and findings of the facts. It also mentions that the maritime law was not of great importance as the court often referred back to Roman and Canon law.
