- Abstract
It is generally accepted that in today's health service, women will have a career much the same as men. This emphasizes the fact that women are being given the opportunity to make career moves into senior positions within the health service. The stereotypical roles that are acted out, together with the competition between the two sexes seems to result in the devaluing of caring which, for nurses, has always been central to their role of looking after others. It is ironic that a large profession such as nursing, offering care as a central part of its role, can so easily be blind to needs of its colleagues.
