- Abstract
In this study college students' mental images related to the concepts of shame were examined through metaphors. 252 college students were participated in the study. The findings have revealed that metaphors are grouped under three themes and fourteen subcategories. The findings have showed that shame is evoked by inconsistency with personal, societal and moral standards, negative evaluations by others. In addition, results have indicated that shame is accompanied by self-focused evaluations, suffering, bodily reactions, confusion of mind, feeling as if all eyes are upon oneself, regret. And finally, research findings have showed that shame leads social withdrawal and isolation, restrictions on words and deeds, a desire of avoiding, hiding, removing away and disappearing, persistence trace. Also, the findings has revealed that shame have regulating functions of protecting and control.
