- Abstract
The article examines the history of the teachers' lyceum movement in the early 19th century in the U.S. The roots of the American lyceum system are traced to Josiah Holbrook, a traveling lecturer and teacher, who instituted a system of town and county forums for public lectures, debates, and performances. The purpose and function of lyceums to educate and instruct the general public during the 19th century is analyzed. It is noted that an entertainment factor of the lyceum eclipsed the focus of cultural development by the mid-1800s. The lyceum systems association with the teachers' institute system is discussed.
