- Abstract
Objective: This study was conducted to determine the experiences of the nursing students for whom the standardized patient method was applied in the communication skill training. Method: This study includes the qualitative part of an intervention study conducted using the mixed method. The population of the study was composed of the third-year nursing students who were receiving education in faculty of health sciences of a university and were enrolled at a professional elective course in the spring semester of 2017-2018 academic year (N=45). In the quantitative part of the study, the students who were selected using the chart of simple random numbers, participated in the standardized patient practice and completed the practice constituted the sample of the study (n=23). In the study, the students were provided with the communication skills training by applying the "Standardized Patient" method as well as the classical training. "The Personal Information Form" and the "Instructor Evaluation" and "Self-Assessment Forms" prepared by the researchers in accordance with the literature were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed using number, percentage and thematic assessment. Results: In the study, the students stated that "they felt excited (86.9%) and incompetent (26.0%)" before the standardized patient practice and "they found their performance during the practice moderately satisfying (43.4%)". When their opinions on the contribution of the standardized patient practice to communication training were examined, 60.8% of the students stated that "this practice provided a learning opportunity in a safe environment without harming patients", 69.5% stated that "this practice improved their clinical decision making and critical thinking skills", and 52.1% expressed that "this practice is effective in putting theoretical knowledge into practice". Conclusion: It was determined in the present study that levels of the nursing students' satisfaction with performance in the standardized patient practice were high, their satisfaction with performance in establishing an effective communication, developing clinical skills, and providing discharge training was also high, they considered to improve themselves mostly in dimension of determining psychological needs of patients and their awareness in this matter increased.
