- Abstract
The article focuses on the life and works of Douglas Crockwell, a commercial illustrator, experimental filmmaker, Mutoscope collector, and panorama camera designer. Crockwell studied engineering and business at Washington University but, by the time he graduated, his interest had changed to art. He became successful in magazine illustrations, posters and paintings for dozens of national advertisements. He also pursued a long series of creative projects related to photography and most of them concerned animation or sequential art. His interest in film animation started in 1934. His animated films include "Fantasmagoria I" and "Glen Falls Sequence." In 1939, Crockwell became interested in the Mutoscope and redesigned the Iron-Horse, one of the general categories of Mutoscope.
